Pebble Hills survives Hanks, 49-44, in wild Thursday night shootout at SAC I

El Paso, Texas (SAC I) — Sept. 10, 2026 — For nearly four quarters Thursday night, there was little separating Pebble Hills and Hanks. In a game that featured 93 combined points, the Pebble Hills Spartans ultimately made just enough plays to remain perfect. Pebble Hills defeated Hanks, 49-44, Thursday night at SAC I, surviving an offensive shootout that pushed the Spartans to 3-0 on the young 2026 season. For Hanks, the loss snapped an impressive 2-0 start and dropped the Knights to 2-1. The game was part of the El Paso Broadcast Company's Thursday Night Lights lineup, with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at SAC I. A heavyweight offensive battle Neither team entered Thursday night short on confidence. Pebble Hills opened the season with a 31-17 victory at Midland, then followed with a 35-14 win over Chapin. The Spartans had scored 66 points through their first two games and entered Thursday with a perfect record. Hanks was equally impressive to begin the season. The Knights opened with a 63-27 victory over Montwood and followed it with a dominant 55-0 shutout of Bowie, putting 118 points on the board in their first two games. Something had to give. Instead, both offenses continued rolling. Spartans find the winning formula Pebble Hills ultimately finished with 49 points, enough to withstand Hanks' 44-point response. The five-point margin was the closest game Pebble Hills has played this season and came after the Spartans opened the year with victories by 14 and 21 points. The win also gives head coach Ryan Warner and the Spartans a 3-0 start heading into next week's road matchup at Odessa Permian. Pebble Hills' playmakers The Spartans entered the night with several established offensive weapons. Junior Lj Bailey, who plays wide receiver and defensive back, was listed by MaxPreps as Pebble Hills' leading receiver at 112.0 receiving yards per game entering the contest. Bailey also led the team with four total touchdowns. Senior Oscar Hernandez, a wide receiver/running back, led Pebble Hills in rushing production at 69.5 yards per game entering Thursday. On defense, senior outside linebacker Jose Ambriz was averaging 8.5 tackles per game, while senior defensive lineman Jayden Frasier led the Spartans with two sacks. Defensive back Daveon Sullivan had also recorded an interception. Those numbers help illustrate the depth of a Pebble Hills team that has now scored 115 points through three games while allowing 75. Hanks brings plenty of firepower The Knights came into SAC I with their own collection of offensive standouts. Senior running back/linebacker Austin Deucher entered the matchup averaging 154.5 rushing yards per game and leading Hanks with six total touchdowns. Senior receiver/defensive back Alex Robles was averaging 113 receiving yards per game, while senior linebacker Kristian Barrios was averaging 15 tackles per game. Senior linebacker/running back Austin Freres had also recorded a team-high four sacks entering the contest. Those weapons helped explain why Hanks had already scored 118 points through its first two games. On Thursday, the Knights put another 44 points on the scoreboard. It just wasn't enough. 93 points tell the story The final score — Pebble Hills 49, Hanks 44 — produced 93 combined points, making it one of the highest-scoring games involving either program in the early 2026 season. It was also a remarkable contrast in styles from the traditional defensive battles often associated with high school football. Both teams entered Thursday averaging more than 50 points per game: Pebble Hills: 31, 35 and 49 points in its first three games Hanks: 63, 55 and 44 points in its first three games The result was a Thursday night shootout that kept the crowd at SAC I engaged until the final whistle. Spartans stay perfect With the victory, Pebble Hills improves to 3-0 and remains one of the Borderland's unbeaten teams. The Spartans' résumé now includes victories over Midland, Chapin and Hanks. Their next challenge comes Sept. 18, when Pebble Hills travels to face Odessa Permian at 7 p.m. Hanks, meanwhile, will look to rebound Sept. 18 against Ysleta at home.
