Sun Bowl | El Paso, Texas
The UTEP Miners showed flashes of life Saturday night, but Nevada's ground game and defensive pressure ultimately proved too much to overcome.
The Wolf Pack defeated UTEP 30-13 at the Sun Bowl, using a punishing rushing attack and a pivotal third-quarter scoring burst to pull away from the Miners in their Mountain West matchup.
The loss dropped UTEP to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in Mountain West play, while Nevada improved to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in conference action.
TURNER BREAKS THE GAME OPEN
Nevada running back Herschel Turner delivered the game's defining performance, rushing for a career-high 192 yards on 19 carries.
His biggest moment came late in the third quarter, when Turner broke free for a 72-yard touchdown run, extending Nevada's lead to 23-7 and shifting the momentum firmly toward the visitors.
The Wolf Pack finished with 274 rushing yards and 376 total yards, controlling possession for more than 35 minutes. Dominic Kelley added 99 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground, along with a 21-yard touchdown reception.
MOORE CONNECTS TWICE
UTEP quarterback Raymond Moore III accounted for both Miner touchdowns, completing 16 of 26 passes for 132 yards and two scores.
In the second quarter, Moore connected with Jaden Smith for a 16-yard touchdown, trimming Nevada's lead to 10-7 and giving the home crowd a reason to believe.
After Nevada stretched its advantage to 30-7, Moore engineered a late scoring drive, finding Cash Cheeks for an eight-yard touchdown with 1:07 remaining. The Miners attempted a two-point conversion but couldn't complete it. <Cite refs={["turn760069search0","turn760069search4"]}/>
Smith led UTEP with four catches for 56 yards and a touchdown, while Cheeks finished with two receptions for 31 yards and a score.
DEFENSE BATTLES, OFFENSE STRUGGLES
The Miners' defense produced some important moments, including a Nevada fumble recovery by Dycin Davis that set up UTEP's first touchdown.
But Nevada's defense consistently disrupted the Miners' offense, holding UTEP to just 79 rushing yards and 211 total yards. The Wolf Pack recorded nine tackles for loss and limited the Miners to just one conversion on 14 third-down attempts.
Defensively, Isaiah Bogerty led UTEP with a career-high 15 tackles. Kode Lowe added 14 stops, while Jayden Wilson recorded 12. Sterling Miles and Leander Parrish each registered a sack.
THE ROAD AHEAD
There is little time for the Miners to dwell on the defeat. UTEP returns to action Saturday, October 17, against San José State, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. Mountain Time.
For UTEP, the challenge now is turning those flashes of progress into four quarters of consistent football. Nevada controlled the line of scrimmage, won the possession battle and delivered the decisive blow when Turner broke loose for his long touchdown.
Nevada 30. UTEP 13.
The Miners will look to regroup next week and find a way to turn the page.
