MINERS FALL TO ARIZONA IN FOUR SETS AS NON-CONFERENCE PLAY COMES TO A CLOSE

EL PASO, Texas — September 22, 2026 The UTEP Miners battled inside a packed Memorial Gym on Tuesday night, but Arizona Wildcats came away with a hard-fought 3-1 victory, closing out UTEP’s non-conference schedule and handing the Miners an 8-4 overall record heading into Mountain West play. The night had all the ingredients of a major Borderland volleyball event. UTEP entered the matchup at 8-3 after testing itself against nationally ranked TCU and Baylor the previous week, while Arizona arrived in El Paso after a dramatic five-set comeback victory over San Diego State. A MATCH THAT WENT DOWN TO THE WIRE Arizona established control early, taking the opening set 25-19. The second set was where the match really began to turn into a heavyweight battle. UTEP pushed the Wildcats deep into the frame, but Arizona ultimately escaped 27-25, putting the Miners in a 2-0 hole. Rather than fold, UTEP answered. The Miners came roaring back in the third set, taking advantage of their offensive rhythm and defensive pressure to claim the frame 25-19 and force a fourth set. Suddenly, Memorial Gym was alive again. The fourth set delivered another dramatic finish. UTEP battled point-for-point with the Wildcats, but Arizona made the critical plays late and secured the set 26-24, ending the match 3-1. A TOUGH TEST AT THE RIGHT TIME For UTEP, Tuesday's match was another opportunity to compete against a Power Conference opponent before turning its attention toward conference play. Coming into the match, the Miners had already faced No. 13 TCU and No. 18 Baylor, while also defeating UIW 3-1 during the Baylor Classic. UTEP had established itself as a team capable of playing at a high level against challenging competition. Arizona also entered with plenty of momentum. The Wildcats had rallied from a two-set deficit against San Diego State just days earlier, winning three consecutive sets to complete the comeback. That experience showed Tuesday night. NOW, THE MOUNTAIN WEST The non-conference portion of the schedule is officially in the books. UTEP now turns its attention to the Mountain West, where the Miners were selected to finish first in the 2026 preseason poll, receiving four first-place votes and 84 total points. And that makes Tuesday's loss less about an ending and more about a transition. The Miners have spent the opening weeks of the season testing themselves against quality opponents. Now comes the part of the schedule that ultimately matters most within their new conference home. UTEP will hit the road Friday and Saturday to face Wyoming, beginning Mountain West play.
