Homecoming night is supposed to be special. For the Bel Air Highlanders, Friday night became downright unforgettable. With the lights shining at Highlander Stadium and the home crowd behind them, Bel Air put together an offensive explosion, defeating the visiting El Paso Tigers 64-20 on September 11. The victory gave the Highlanders their first win of the 2026 season and improved their record to 1-2. But the final score doesn't fully tell the story. A Second Quarter to Remember For one quarter, this looked like a football game. Bel Air and El Paso traded punches in the opening period, entering the second quarter tied 14-14. Then everything changed. The Highlanders erupted for 38 points in the second quarter, turning a competitive contest into a runaway before halftime. Bel Air carried a commanding 52-20 advantage into the locker room, effectively putting the game out of reach. That's the kind of quarter that can change the personality of an entire season. Bel Air added another 12 points in the third quarter before both offenses slowed considerably in the fourth. Final: Bel Air 64, El Paso 20. Offense Finds Its Rhythm After opening the season with losses to Eastwood and Socorro, Bel Air desperately needed a performance that could build confidence. It got one. The Highlanders produced 291 passing yards and 214 rushing yards, according to the game's reported statistics — a balanced offensive attack that generated more than 500 yards of total offense. Quarterback Angel Dominguez has emerged as one of Bel Air's key offensive pieces early in the season. MaxPreps lists the senior among the Highlanders' statistical leaders and credits him with 721 total yards through the team's first three games. Sophomore Aiden Leyva is another name to watch. The 2029 running back/linebacker entered the season as part of Bel Air's young core and is already among the team's touchdown leaders. A Much-Needed Win Let's be honest: the first two weeks weren't exactly what Bel Air envisioned. The Highlanders opened with a 65-13 loss to Eastwood, then dropped a heartbreaking 34-28 decision to Socorro. But that's why Friday mattered. The Highlanders didn't merely win. They responded. And they did it in front of their home crowd on Homecoming night. That's the kind of victory that can give a young team some momentum heading into the heart of the schedule. Now Comes Eastlake The celebration won't last long. Waiting on the other side is an Eastlake team that enters the matchup undefeated at 3-0 after surviving Midland Legacy in a wild 51-48 shootout on September 11. Bel Air will host Eastlake on Friday, September 18, at 7 p.m. Talk about a measuring-stick game. The Highlanders have already shown they can put points on the board. Now they'll get an opportunity to prove that Friday night's explosion wasn't simply a Homecoming-night flash.
