EASTLAKE 51, MIDLAND LEE 48: FALCONS WIN A WILD ONE IN EL PASO

Some football games are won. Others are survived. Friday night's showdown between 6A Eastlake and Midland Lee was the latter. In one of the wildest offensive shootouts of the young 2026 season, the Eastlake Falcons held off a furious Midland Lee comeback to defeat the Rebels 51-48 at the Socorro ISD Student Activities Complex. With the victory, Eastlake remained perfect at 3-0, while Midland Lee dropped to 2-1. And for Eastlake, the victory wasn't just about the number in the win column. It was about surviving. THE FALCONS FLEW EARLY Eastlake wasted little time establishing the tone. The Falcons jumped out to a 17-10 first-quarter advantage, then extended the lead to 30-20 at halftime. By the end of the third quarter, Eastlake had built what looked like a comfortable 51-27 advantage. Comfortable, however, is not a word anyone should use around Midland Lee. The Rebels came roaring back. Midland Lee exploded for 21 fourth-quarter points, cutting an 18-point deficit to just three and putting the Falcons under enormous pressure in the closing minutes. Eastlake needed every point it had scored in the first three quarters. And, ultimately, every one mattered. WILLIAMS PUTS ON A SHOW Eastlake quarterback Julian Williams delivered one of the most impressive individual performances of the night. The senior quarterback completed 32 of 48 passes for 472 yards and seven touchdowns, according to the game statistics. Seven. Touchdowns. Williams also added 25 rushing yards on 14 carries. His favorite target was Diego Diharce, who turned in an enormous night of his own. Diharce hauled in 10 receptions for 214 yards and three touchdowns, giving the Falcons a dynamic combination that Midland Lee simply couldn't consistently contain. It was the kind of quarterback-receiver performance that normally produces a comfortable victory. Friday night, it produced a nail-biter. THE REBELS REFUSED TO GO AWAY Midland Lee quarterback JP Reyes kept the Rebels within striking distance throughout the night. Reyes finished 31-of-40 passing for 379 yards and three touchdowns, with no interceptions. Running back Hayes Hamm added two rushing touchdowns, while receiver Ja'Braylen Anders was once again a major factor, finishing with 17 receptions for 155 yards and a touchdown. Then came the fourth quarter. Trailing 51-33, the Rebels kept punching. And punching. And punching. Suddenly, a game that appeared firmly in Eastlake's control became a three-point thriller. ONE LAST CHANCE With the game hanging in the balance, Midland Lee had one final opportunity. The Rebels got the ball back and were still fighting for a miracle finish. As time expired, Midland Lee's Tyler Day intercepted a desperation pass from Williams. For a moment, it appeared the Rebels might actually have one last chance to steal the game. But during the return, Midland Lee fumbled — ending the comeback attempt and sending Eastlake's home crowd into celebration. Ballgame. Eastlake 51. Midland Lee 48. A STATEMENT FOR EASTLAKE There are defensive performances that coaches love. Friday night wasn't one of them. But there was something else on display at the Socorro ISD Student Activities Complex: Resilience. Eastlake's offense produced 472 passing yards and 39 rushing yards, according to MaxPreps. Midland Lee answered with 379 passing yards and 88 rushing yards. The Falcons simply made enough plays when it mattered most. And that's becoming a theme for this Eastlake team. After three games, the Falcons are 3-0, ranked No. 1 in El Paso by MaxPreps and positioned as one of the area's early 6A contenders. But Friday's victory also exposed something Eastlake will need to clean up. You can't give a team as talented as Midland Lee a second life. The Rebels nearly made them pay. NEXT STOP: BEL AIR Now the Falcons turn their attention to another El Paso opponent. Eastlake travels to face Bel Air on Friday, September 18, with the Highlanders coming off a 64-20 Homecoming victory over El Paso. That matchup suddenly has plenty of intrigue. Eastlake brings a 3-0 record and one of the area's most explosive passing attacks. Bel Air brings momentum after its offensive eruption. And if Friday night taught us anything, expect plenty of fireworks. For Eastlake, though, the immediate takeaway is simple: They survived a heavyweight fight. They watched an 18-point lead nearly disappear. They made the final play. And they walked away undefeated. Eastlake 51, Midland Lee 48.
